Dry Brushing: How to Do It

Dry brushing is about as simple as self-care gets: a brush, bare skin, five minutes before you shower.

What you need

A natural-bristle body brush. A long handle helps for your back, but isn't essential. Firm bristles are fine; harsh, scratchy ones aren't.

How to do it

  1. Start dry, before your shower.
  2. Begin at the feet and use long, light sweeping strokes up the legs, working towards the heart.
  3. Do the arms next, from hands towards shoulders.
  4. On the stomach, use gentle circles.
  5. Keep the pressure light. Skin should look faintly pink, never red or sore.
  6. Shower afterwards and moisturise.

How often

Two or three times a week is plenty to begin with. Many people do it daily, but there's no prize for more.

Skip it if

Avoid broken, irritated or sunburnt skin, and any area with eczema, psoriasis, a rash, varicose veins or a wound. If you have a skin condition, ask your GP or a dermatologist first.

The honest bit

People mostly stick with dry brushing because it feels good and makes skin feel smooth. Treat it as a pleasant few minutes in your routine rather than a treatment, and you won't be disappointed.
